<p>Right out of the blocks, let’s establish the fact that dieting shouldn’t really be necessary. Unfortunately, primarily because of what we consider a normal intake of food, going on a diet has become all too prevalent these days.</p>

<p>We are bombarded on all sides by a tidal wave of advertising promoting foods that, for the most part, aren’t very good for us. We don’t get the nutrition we need on a daily basis and instead take to snacking on food items that are basically worthless.</p>
</p>
<p>Nature never intended for us to eat the way the majority of the population does. Nature intended that our food intake be laden with fruits, nuts and vegetables, not Big Macs and Whoppers. By largely turning our backs on what we should eat, we increase the chance that we’ll feel hungry more often, a result, in part, of not consuming those foods that contribute to our nutritional makeup.</p>
</p>
<p>The epidemic of obesity, especially among the young, is truly a tragedy. Obesity leads to myriad health problems and diminishes the general quality and joy of life. All of us need to think less of dieting and more of consuming the right foods that will genuinely nourish us and help us fight the urge to eat more and more all the time. When you consistently cut back on the number of calories you consume, your body takes this as a signal that you are in the midst of a famine. <p>Researchers have recently shown that a low-carbohydrate diet appears to be effective in helping overweight people shed pounds safely. In 2008, a study appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, with the title, &#8220;Weight Loss With a Low-Carbohydrate, Mediterranean, or Low-Fat Diet.&#8221; The results seem reasonable conclusive, as participants lost more weight on the low-carb diet than on the others, without any sign of the health problems that some people assign to low-carb eating.</p>
<p>The results of this study are certainly encouraging. Now we know that a low-carbohydrate diet is generally the most effective. So that&#8217;s all you need to do. Just go on a low-carb diet and after a while you&#8217;ll <a target="_blank" href="http://getfitatlast.com">get fit</a> and healthy. Unfortunately, there&#8217;s more to it that that, and even the most effective diet ever won&#8217;t get you the results you need.</p>
<p>First, dieting alone doesn&#8217;t help you to build or even help you retain your muscle mass. As you may know, once people reach thirty or so years of age, we begin to start losing our muscles. An average person will lose 5-10 pounds of muscle per decade. And dieting does nothing to change that. A good diet will reduce the amount of fat over your shrinking muscles, but it won&#8217;t do anything to build new muscle, or even retain what you already have.</p>
<p>Secondly, the results cited in this study are lame. The participants were overweight men and women, or people with Type 2 diabetes. They were split up into three groups, one for each of the  three diet approaches. Each person also received instructions and information related specifically to the type of diet they were on. Over the course of two years, each group of people got a total of 27 hours worth of meetings with a dietician who helped them stay with the plan. People who had trouble sticking to the plan got motivational phone calls as well.</p>
<p>So what were the actual weight-loss results during this study? When people stuck with it, the low-fat diet gave the worst results, followed by the Mediterranean diet, with the low-carbohydrate diet giving the best weight loss results. The diets also produced some encouraging changes in blood chemistry, such as lower levels of cholesterol. If you want actual numbers, the people on the low-carbohydrate diet lost just over 12 pounds across the two-year study.</p>
<p>This sounds good at first, but think about it. The best performing type of diet, with more support than most of us would have, caused a loss of just over a dozen in 24 months. One type of diet may be better than the others, and for overweight and diabetic people to lose weight safely is great. But that&#8217;s not a lot of weight to lose over 2 years, and would it really give you the body and fitness you&#8217;re looking for?</p>

<p> There are two main reasons why people go on diets.  1) They have some medical condition that requires a better eating habit such as high blood pressure.  2) They would like to lose weight or slim down.</p>
<p> When you diet to <a target="_blank" href="http://www.theundietplan.com">lose weight</a>, you need to ask yourself one key question, “Am I losing weight to weigh less or to slim down?” This question is so important it determines how you will approach your diet.  I’ve seen way too much dependency on the bathroom scale from dieters and not enough on how well their clothes fit or how they are toning up.  This can lead to multiple problems; the biggest of which is you could lose as much muscle as fat.  If the purpose of your diet is to slim down and look better then judging your success solely by the bathroom scale will only prove a hindrance to your ultimate goal.</p>
<p> I have a large problem with a lot of the mainstream diets out there in they although they help you lose weight, they are often fairly unhealthy and do nothing to help you keep the weight off once it&#8217;s lost.  When a diet prevents you from eating a wide range of foods or forces you to eat a very low amount of calories you will have a much larger chance of failure.  You should avoid any of these extreme diets at all costs, both for your health and your long-term weight loss goals.</p>
<p> Losing Weight</p>
<p> I will talk a little bit about how weight is lost, and when I say this I&#8217;m talking about weight from fat, not water weight or muscle weight.  Essentially fat is energy that your body had too much of and is storing for use when food may be in short supply.  So, if you deprive your body of energy by eating fewer calories than it requires for its daily functions, your body will turn to other sources for that energy.  Those sources are typically fat and muscle.  This is why exercise is so important when you want to lose weight, if you don&#8217;t use your muscles your body won&#8217;t think it really needs them and will use a lot of muscle for energy instead of fat.</p>
<p> So, keeping all the muscle that you currently have, or even adding some will greatly assist you in your weight loss endeavors.  Unlike fat, your body needs to burn calories to keep muscle around, so, by adding some muscle through light resistance training, you will be upping the amount of calories your body needs to burn every day just to stay going.  So, by not exercising, your body will think that it doesn&#8217;t need all the muscle you have, thus burning it for energy, and when that happens you will use less energy just to stay alive, thus making it even harder to continue losing weight.</p>
<p> This brings me to my next topic: exercise.  As much as most of us hate to do it, exercise is incredibly important in high quality weight loss (the loss of body fat as opposed to muscle or just water).  However that doesn’t mean you have to go join the local gym and pump iron for 2 hours a day or train to run a marathon, it just means you need to work that muscle a bit so your body keeps it around.  There are many different exercises you can do at home that don’t require any additional equipment nor do they demand too much of your time, but will still get the job done. But the best exercise will always be finding something that you enjoy doing, such as swimming, kickboxing, aerobic dancing etc…  And remember, finding a partner will help with motivation and boosting the fun factor of it all. So, remember, what you eat is very important in losing weight, but exercise is just as critical. Find a partner, find a sport or other activity that you enjoy, do anything, just as long as it&#8217;s active.  I promise that you will succeed where others so often fail.</p>
