The Global Pandemic Of Fat Children Must Be Addressed Immediately

For the last year or two the childhood obesity epidemic is more and more prominent on the news. If a child is obese it can lead to serious health issues for the child like diabetes, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, skeletal disorders, sleep problems, psychological problems and symptoms and gastro-intestinal spasms. Such disorders can be expected to continue into adulthood. Research has unfortunately shown that obese children has a much higher risk than other people to turn into obese adults.

Despite all the above, parents can easily impact on the lifestyle of their children and guide them to achieve a healthy lifestyle and remain healthy.

What role can parents play to have a positive impact on obesity amongst children? Parents must address the causes of child obesity. Parents must give their children a lot of attention and help them to feel wanted. Children that are neglected by their parents have a much higher likelyhood of obesity than their peers. Your kids should not be pressured into eating more than they want to during meals, all you will achieve is to train your child’s metabolic system to make your child eat more than he or she needs.

Do not emphasize too much the amount of food eaten. Of far more importance is that the child should eat properly and then get adequate exercise. If you worry too much about your child’s weight you are going to encourage eating behaviours that are abnormal.

Your child should not spend so much time in front of the telly. You will find that his or her weight is almost directly proportional to the time sitting motionless in front of the tv, watching television is obviously going to reduce physical activities by the child, and then it naturally also reduces the body’s metabolism. The junk food commercials on television also affects children, and they are encouraged to eat more junk food and drink soft drinks that will have one result only and that is increased weight.

If you are thinking that your child weighs more than his or her ideal weight and that there is a risk of obesity, you should go to the doctor as soon as possible, and stop obesity in its tracks immediately. It is not really necessary for expecting mothers to eat for two persons, too much food while you are pregnant just dramatically increases the possibility that both you and your unborn child will in future become obese. The young infant must be breastfeeded for at least one year. With your infant still very young, there should be strong emphasis on fruits, grains and other fresh produce while closely watching to see if the child is really hungry before being fed.

If you note that there is a high risk that your child may become obese, try using low fat milk instead of the richer variety. Avoid cane sugar and snacks that contain excessive fat, because they are very high in calories. If your kid is still at school, put in place steadfast rules as to how much they are allowed to watch television, snacks may only be of the healthy variety, food treats will be allowed only occasionally and generally good food habits must be maintained.

The child obesity problem does not remain static, it increases with each year that passes and, since the early eighties, there has been an alarming increase. The child obesity epidemic poses a great risk to our children’s children, it is now the time to stop it on a globewide scale.

Can Thyroid Dysfunction Affect Obesity?

Our human body is controlled by a series of hormonal functions. N fact it can also be said that hormones are the key to maintain a vital balance of the human body. They are produced in a very minimal quantity. Any kind of disturbance to it almost halts or misguides the bodily mechanisms. They are produced by the various parts of the brain like the pituitary, hypothalamus regions. One of the most prime hormones that is of great importance is the thyroid hormone. This hormone works in conjunction with the iodine supplement, since, iodine can not be produced by the human cells, and they have to be supplemented from external source in order to keep the thyroid hormone in action.

In addition to the hormonal control by the brain, many external factors also influence the secretion of the hormones. The factors are inclusive of the diet predominantly, life style, stress conditions. They tend to alter the hormonal secretion and maintaining them well with in the limits. Excessive thyroid production can lead to hyper thyroidism and in sufficient thyroid production leads to hypo thyroidism.

Surprisingly at least 20% of the women and 10% of the men are suffering from thyroid problems. Unfortunately, the black side is that they are not aware of the fact that they have such syndromes and so fail to take treatments in the initial stage. At latter stages, the treatments become either difficult to treat or sometimes to her disgrace, can not be treated at all or might take a very long time may be years to get cured completely. In order to avoid such hazards, it is required from the individual that he has to check his hormonal levels frequently from a medical firm.

The main hormone that helps to control the body metabolisms and weight are the thyroid hormones. They in fact are the key reasons for over weight people due to hormonal problems. Treating them can bring them back to their original state. Many toxins that are produced in the body from external source try to reduce the thyroid hormone level predominantly to help them to cause further damage to the body.

Thyroid mal functions may occur due to a list of known reasons like food allergies or intolerance to gluten. Other factor also includes Selenium, zinc and fatty acids deficiencies. The lack of the pro hormone called the thyroxin and iodine can also be one of the prime reasons for the hormone dysfunction.

Initially, the individual can identify the thyroid deficiency by a list of common symptoms which include fatigue, depression, slugginess, muscle cramps, constipation, hair loss, less sexual desires and menstrual problems. In some cases water retention also occurs. Dryness of the skin is also one of the common symptoms associated with thyroid deficiency.

Fortunately there are many ways to overcome this problem and in turn help to over come the obesity. Try to eliminate any foods that are allergic towards thyroid, exercise regularly, consume high iodine rich foods, foods rich in vitamin A and vitamin D along with sufficient zinc and selenium can help to fight obesity. Medications with in active T4 and T3 hormones also help to over come the deficiency. Drink sufficient water. When all these seem to be in effective, contact a doctor for analysing the cause and cure.

Do You Have to be Over Weight to be Morbidly Obese?

The first and probably the most critical step in dealing with excessive weight is understanding how morbid obesity is defined. The obvious reason for this is that if you do not know what you are really dealing with how you can deal with it. It can be very difficult to come up with a meaningful definition on morbid obesity with no two people being alike. Applying a general definition to a specific situation can be as bad as having no definition at all.

Understanding that the definition of morbid obesity involves a variety of subjective variables such as exercise habits, age and eating habits is necessary to the determining whether it applies to you or a loved one.

Do You Fit into the Definition of Morbid Obesity ?

Although it is not a very pretty term it is critically important to know if you fall into the definition of morbid obesity. The National Institute of Health defines morbid obesity as having a body weight that is 20% above ideal.

By the definition of morbid obesity of the NIH, an amazing number of people, particularly in North America are morbidly obese so the definition has become more important than ever. Our children’s generation, if we continue down the path we are on, is going to see a dramatic increase in obesity.

However, just because you meet this requirement of the NIH definition of morbid obesity does not necessarily mean you are morbidly obese. For example, a person confined to bed may be way below this guideline and still be morbidly obese while a football player could easily fit this guideline and not be obese at all. Although a good general rule of thumb the NIH definition of morbid obesity is not enough.

Let’s look at some variables that might better help us with the definition of morbid obesity :

1)  If your weight is causing health problems then you may be at or dangerously close to morbid obesity . You are going to want to start right away on getting your weight down if indeed this is the case. There are a number of very different and successful weight loss methods available to try to help lose any unwanted pounds. A healthy weight can be achieved although it may take a bit of trial and effort.

You must find a way to lose weight so that you will be able to keep it off for the long term. Those short term diet fads may help to get some weight off initially but in the end most people will put even more weight back on because they will not help keep it off.

2) Are you doing enough exercise? Each day enough exercise should be done to burn off any excess calories consumed. For this reason the amount of exercise you get should be a major part of how morbid obesity id defined. A critical element in producing obesity is our rapidly increasing sedentary lifestyles.

3)  When defining obesity it is necessary that mental or psychological factors must also be part of the definition of morbid obesity. A person’s mental condition affects the way someone looks at themselves and how they behave. We probably won’t be healthy physically if we are not healthy mentally.

To sum up, if any of these three simple criteria applies to someone then there is a good likelihood that person would fit the definition of morbid obesity. Morbid obesity is not to be ignored and it could be fatal if action is not taken. As we have developed this definition it is obvious that lifestyle decisions that every individual must make is the critical factor and in the case of morbid obesity it usually demands some tough changes that must be made and can only be identified by using a correct understanding of how morbid obesity is defined.

Is there too much emphasis on obesity in society?

Author admin    Category Uncategorized     Tags , , ,

I don’t know about you but I am getting really sick of constantly being guilt tripped about health and fitness. The other week I was at a friend’s place and had a go on Wii fit, a game which until that point I had deliberately avoided like the plague. Now don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate the importance of keeping fit and staying healthy. But as far as I could see the game was just a way for Nintendo to make money out of you doing something you’d probably already be doing.

I’d heard from a lot of people that Wii fit makes you think you’re far more unfit than you really are, and sure enough when I stepped (with some trepidation) onto the scales the game told me that I was very overweight. Now, I’m not claiming to be the picture of perfect fitness – I’m not supermodel skinny and although I do get regular exercise and eat healthily, I know I could probably be fitter. But I’m not fat, and I’m certainly not obese. It’s hardly surprising Wii fit has had so many complaints, considering how many people already have body issues thanks to the media constantly telling us that we should all have a figure like Kate Moss or Angelina Jolie.

It’s true that obesity is a real problem in society, especially amongst children and young people, but is making everyone feel bad about themselves really the best way to deal with it? The latest scheme being tested in Liverpool is to stop it before it becomes an issue, by giving all children under five free gym memberships. The existing system of free memberships for children of school age is one thing, but surely under fives should be getting all their necessary exercise from their normal daily play? And if they’re not then perhaps the real issue in society is not overweight children, but the question of why they are not able to play as they should anymore.

For myself, Wii fit succeeded in making me feel bad for a grand total of five minutes. Then I remembered my healthy diet, regular exercise and that I make sure I don’t drink too much or eat fast food, and realised that I don’t have anything to feel guilty about. And I’ve since found a brilliant new way of staying fit without taking too much time out of my routine – FitFlops. Flip flops that actually give you a workout and help keep you in shape as you go about your normal day – genius!
